On my long list of actors and actresses that are woefully underappreciated and underseen on the big screen – Richard Panebianco, Casey Siemaszko, Penelope Ann Miller, Anthony Michael Hall, Jennifer Grey, Edward Furlong, Thora Birch, Ken Olin, Patricia Wettig and Kyle Chandler to name but a few – one of the top luminaries who positively delivers gold standard performances in any project he’s associated with certainly leads the charge of the neglected: Griffin Dunne.
Dunne, a character actor par excellence, literally stole the entire show in such gems as An American Werewolf in London, Dallas Buyers Club, The French Dispatch, My Girl and (his magnum opus) Martin Scorsese’s After Hours. Yet if you were to ask almost anyone at random about Dunne and his solid body of journeyman acting duties, you would no doubt receive a quizzical look before being asked to move along. However, those same people would no doubt recognize the NYC native and eldest son of the legendary Dominick Dunne in any of the above-mentioned films. Imbuing every scene he’s in with a sort of everyman grace, Dunne is the best friend you always wish that you’d had: warm, effervescent and generous to a fault. Plus, he gets bonus points for producing one of the best films of the 1980s, Sidney Lumet’s Running on Empty.
All of the above comes to mind as news reaches us today from our Johnny Dangerously friends at The Hollywood Reporter that Griffin Dunne has just joined the cast of freshman director Bryan Greenberg’s film Junction.
Dunne will be joining the opioid drama Junction alongside fellow actors Sophia Bush, Dascha Polanco and Ashley Madekwe. Junction – which is also written by Greenberg – is set to tackle today’s opioid crisis in the U.S. through three very different prisms: a patent who becomes hooked on prescription meds, a Big Wheel of a major pharmaceutical company and, finally, through that of a doctor.
In a press release announcing Dunne’s and the other actor’s involvement with his film, Greenberg said that he was “thrilled to work with this amazing ensemble. The cast of Junction is truly an embarrassment of riches.”
We humbly concur with Greenberg’s assessment of that talented lot, specifically in regards to Dunne.
Get set for an end of 2022 theatrical release of Junction and keep your eyes peeled to this space for any and all information on this film as it becomes known to us!
