Hi Ana, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Great Thank You!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Astor Piazolla”?
In the memory of the great Argentinian composer Astor Piazzola of tango, I wanted to write a song for him, so here its is “Astor Piazzola”.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Last Year we celebrated his 100th birth day, so in his honor I wrote this song.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
For Bahía we stayed for a week in the south of France in the French Riviera between Nice and Marseille. It was a great week of drinking good wine, eating good food, filming and playing music.
The single comes off your new album Bahia – what’s the story behind the title?
Bahía is the neighborhood where I grew up, you might think its Bahía of Brazil but no, Its Bahía of La Habana Cuba.
How was the recording and writing process?
The album was written during the lock down of the pandemic, during this time I was in Barcelona and had the opportunity to have a good space to write and compose music.
For the recording it was done in a studio in Barcelona. In One day, from Beginning to end like a live concert.
What role does Cuba play in your music?
My musical roots are in Cuba, my family is cuban. So naturally this has always been a big part of who I am.
How do you go on balancing all your distinctive influences into one?
For me a musical style is define by your own experience, personally my life is marked by travelling and music. This is my identity and part of who I am.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
For me it was important to do a research of women composers, producers and Musicians.
After listening a lot of music I had the sense that most of the music we heard now a days is made by mostly men. For my it was important to stay true my voice and to make something different.
What else is happening next in Ana Carla Maza’s world?
Im composing and producing for Big Bands, quartets, duos and clearly preparing a new album. This time with more musicians !
