Hi Piper, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi! I’m well! I’m excited to be speaking with you today!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Breadcrumbs”?
Of course! So I started writing Breadcrumbs about a year ago now, and as I do with most songs, put it aside until I was ready to pick up the pen and finish it. When I came back from studying abroad in January I met my incredible now-co-writer, Cole, who helped me finish the song! I learned the word “breadcrumb” or “breadcrumbing” from my therapist, who helped me understand how and why my ex-situationship and I communicated with each other in the way we did. “Breadcrumbing”, can be anything from “hey you up?” to your ex at 3am after not talking to them for weeks, or “i miss you, lets talk” after 4 months and he just broke up with his girlfriend again. I wanted to convey the flirty and toxic actions of leading someone on from both sides of the relationship. Let’s be honest, we’ve all either done it, or had it done to us. So any way you listen to this song, you should be able to relate.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I was talking to this guy for a while–the same guy that inspired my last single “Risk”, actually–and every few months he’d slide back into my DMs and hit me with an “i miss you, how are you?” sort of text. Occasionally, I would do the exact same thing a couple times. He didn’t miss me, I didn’t miss him, we were bored. I realized it was just this back and forth thing we were going to continue doing to each other until we started seeing either each other officially (which was never going to happen), or someone else. He started seeing someone else and I moved to Italy!
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Yes! This track will have a lyric video released very very soon! No music video yet, but I would definitely be open to doing one if fans really responded to the song and wanted one.
The single comes off your new album Based On True Events – what’s the story behind the title?
As I started dating in New York I was getting all this new inspiration and having unexpected experiences. Romantics probably know, but, you watch all these rom coms growing up that are set in the city that have a happy ending. When you’re an adult you think, this should be easy, then quickly realize Hallmark and Hollywood lied to you. So Based on True Events is supposed to serve as a kind of expectation versus reality dichotomy–where what I’m singing about is the reality of what it was like for me (and probably many others). Every time I sit down to lunch with friends and relay the complications of my dramatic dating life, they always say “Piper, your life is actually a rom com. You should get a show.” Yes–it’s that bad. So the expectation part of this album is represented by the creative direction of all the singles and the album, through popular Rom Coms. I’m really excited for it to come together!
How was the recording and writing process?
Breadcrumbs was kind of written in two stages. The first being last summer when I started it after the first bout of inspiration, and the second being when I met my co-writer Cole earlier this year. We pretty much finished the song within 2 hours. Honestly, I was not so happy with the idea of having a co writer, since I write 100% of my music solo. Earlier in that week I had been in session after session with other producers and writers, none of them capable of what I needed, so I had pretty low hopes for the kid. Then I got on that Zoom with Cole and it was like magic. We worked so effortlessly together and I knew we had a hit on our hands! He worked on the production for a couple weeks and I jumped into the studio after that. It was our first project together so it took a while for it to come around but in the end, I think it went really well!
What role does NYC play in your music?
NYC is the setting for a lot of my current music and life experiences. I’ve lived here for about 2 ½ years so far and pretty much all of my experiences as an adult have been in this city. I grew up in the Midwest, but I grew upin NYC.
What aspect of your own personal life did you get to explore on this record?
I’m reallyyyyy exploring (and exposing a little bit) my dating life here. It has not been a smooth ride, that’s for sure. But honestly, it’s a little more fun that way.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Definitely the word itself helped me make this song. I spent about 2 days researching the topic, and wondering why no one ever talks about breadcrumbing. We all do it, we just don’t acknowledge it because it’s hard to admit you need to let go of something–or someone. While writing the song, Cole and I went through some of my old text messages, and searched up different meanings for the word as well.
What else is happening next in Piper Page’s world?
So much!! I’ve never been more excited to be so busy. I’ve got three more singles coming out this summer before the album comes out, and a couple collaborations with some other NYC artists too. I’ll be doing some in-person and virtual events with fans which i’m super excited about, and of course, performing live as much as I can!!
