We’re happy to have a little time today with acclaimed and accomplished musician Tommy Marz; greetings and salutations, Tommy! Before we kick the proverbial tin can down the dusty road, how has 2022 been treating you?
Hi there! All things considered, it’s been pretty stellar so far!
Congratulations on the recent April 15 release of your latest single 15! What was the genesis of 15? How did this rousing rock opus come into being?
I released the single ‘Summer Treasure’ last fall and I worked with the hot as fire producer, Electropoint. After the last experience we decided to write another track together. As the track started to come together I really wanted there to be a killer guitar solo on it. Enter – Jeff Schroeder. I presented Jeff the song and he was excited to start coming up with ideas, guitar-wise. All said and done, I think it’s probably one of the best songs I’ve ever released.
The theme of love is an evergreen, of course, in popular music. Why do you think audiences have always had a predilection for that particular subject in rock and roll (and in all other genres, really)?
I think people can really relate to the thought of love always remaining. Even in times of stress or trauma, true love rarely fades. Even your first love.
Along with your jaw-dropping vocals, 15 also features some truly brilliant guitar licks from Jeff Schroeder of The Smashing Pumpkins. Besides the aforementioned guitar shredding, what do you feel Jeff imbues this lovely track with?
For me, it’s more than just his guitar wizardry. I felt like the song gained an entirely different personality after he made his contributions. An even greater soul – if you will.
On the heels of 15, can we expect to see more collaborations between you and Jeff?
We are both hopeful to release another track together in the near future. Life and touring schedules can be a time cruncher but hopefully we’ll be able to make it work!
Who was your producer on 15 and what did that collaboration look like?
Electropoint produced this track as well. He has an incredible ear and he really puts everything he has into a song when he is working on it. We’ve had those “on the fly” type conversations and he moves as quickly as my brain (or mouth lol) does. He just seems to understand everything I’m trying to say. And to be honest, I’m grateful of the working relationship we have.
What do you hope fans walk away feeling after listening to 15?
So far, the comments and msgs I’ve received from people all over the world have had somewhat the same theme. ’15’ seemed to transport them back to a time in their lives that made them feel an emotion. Perhaps a distant memory they haven’t thought about in a while. So that, right there. That’s the payoff when you put out a record. For any one person to have an emotional experience to either the music or lyrics to a song. Doesn’t get any better than that!
What made 15 the perfect follow-up for some of your other recent musical explorations such as Summer Treasure and your cover of From the Dining Table?
Summer Treasure has a summery-fun vibe to it. Sort of a beach party that lasts 24 hours. The Harry Styles song – From the Dining Table has such a somber feel to it. It’s such an incredibly well written song. I was hoping to bring a little nostalgia with ’15’. Which leaves me wondering what the next theme is going to be haha
Word ‘round campfire has it that we can look forward to an epic EP release from you in the very near future. Can you give us a couple of tiny hints as to what we can expect from this upcoming release?
I would say that it is going to flow – start to finish. I’m hoping to line up these tracks so the listener has a little journey to go on.
Can fans look forward to seeing you out on tour in the coming weeks and months?
I have a few things I’m setting up as we speak. Hopefully, I’ll be able to see the faces that go with the DM’s I’ve received on Twitter and Instagram in regards to the song. Jeff and I will also be performing at one of the world’s largest digital music festivals in the world which will be announced shortly.
How did the worldwide pandemic affect you as a musician?
I think it made me focus even more on songwriting. It afforded me time to take deep dives into artists like Taylor Swift & Billy Joel and concentrate on the way they formulate songs. And there was almost a sense of quiet that I’m not sure I’ve ever felt. But it was that quiet time that really let me explore.
Musically, who inspires you in 2022?
I have a few artists I listen to on a daily basis. Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Niall Horan, BTS in terms of contemporaries. But I am still inspired all the time by The Police, Duran Duran, Billy Idol & Duncan Sheik. Oh and I’m really fired up to hear the new 5SOS record.
Final – SILLY! – Question: Favorite movie about the rock and roll scene – This Is Spinal Tap, Almost Famous or La Bamba?
Ha I love all of those but my all time favorite is Eddie and the Cruisers. In fact, after ’15’ was released, Matthew Laurance, the actor that plays Sal Amato in the film gave me a nice and unexpected shout on Twitter. He’s such a great person. I feel fortunate to know him. It could go down as one of my personal music moments – ever. Thanks so much for taking the time to ask such wonderful and deep questions!
