Netflix is a place to watch new movies and original series, sure, but it’s also been a bit of a boon to shows that didn’t necessarily hit on their initial run. Sometimes they even start doing new episodes of those shows. Other times, they just become popular watches on Netflix. Great News is one of those shows.
Now, I watched Great News when it was on, which was in 2017 and 2018. The show was produced by Tina Fey and created by 30 Rock writer Tracey Wigfield. It centered on Katie Wendelson, a producer on the news program “The Breakdown.” Then, her smothering mom Carol gets a role as an intern there. The cast was great, and the show was really good. However, it still only lasted for 23 episodes. Fortunately, now you can watch them all on Netflix. What is the experience of watching Great News like, though? I’ve been rewatching the show recently, and here are my rankings of every episode of the show.
23. “Celebrity Hacking Scandal”
22. “Carol Has a Bully”
21. “The Red Door”
20. “Catfight”
19. “Boardroom Bitch”
18. “Squad Feud”
17. “Pool Show”
16. “Sensitivity Training”
15. “Love is Dead”
14. “Honeypot!”
13. “Competing Offer”
12. “War is Hell”
11. “Bear Attack”
10. “Early Retirement”
9. “Award Show”
8. “Carol’s Eleven”
7. “Pilot”
6. “Chuck Pierce is Blind”
5. “A Christmas Carol Wendelson”
4. “The Fast Track”
3.“Serial Arsonist”
2. “Night of the Living Screen”
1. “Snowmageddon of the Century”
I would say there’s a lot of compression to this ranking. There are no bad episodes, but also no great episodes. I would say the episodes range, on a letter-grade scale, from a B-minus to an A-minus. Maybe that’s partially why the show ended up not continuing? That’s a bit of a stretch, perhaps, but maybe a show that had more big swings would have made a bigger impact. Great News was just a good show most weeks. Sometimes it was merely OK, other times it was really good, but I would say like 15 of these episodes are simply “good.” When you are bingeing a show on Netflix, though, you don’t need that extra incentive to check out the next episode. It’s right there waiting for you.
