Billed as being the number one magic coach in the world, Oscar Owen shares with us what it takes to become an incredible magician. He offers his story about how he got into magic, and gives advice to those looking to master the art of deception.
How did you get into magic?
Ever since I was a young child, I’ve always been fascinated by the supernatural and impossible. I grew up watching magicians like David Blaine and Dynamo perform on television, and wanted to be able to do what they did. So I bought a deck of cards, started practicing and showed as many people as possible my magic. I became hooked when my audiences started to go crazy. I realized that it was possible to create a sense of astonishment at a moment’s notice, and put a smile on anyone’s face.
How does someone become a magician?
Over the last few years, I’ve had the privilege of transforming thousands of people (many of which had no prior experience) into incredible magicians. The easiest way to learn is to grab a deck of cards, open up YouTube, and watch some of my videos there (the channel name Oscar Owen). I teach hundreds of magic tricks for free, which have now been viewed over 100 million times. The point of the YouTube channel is to make magic accessible to anyone and easy to learn.
Can anyone learn magic, or do you need to match certain criteria to learn?
I get this question all the time from aspiring magicians, and the answer is simple – anyone can learn magic! Gender, age, hand size, and technical ability really don’t matter. I’ve taught people magic in their 80s, and I’ve shown young children how to master magic too. All you need to do is learn tricks that match your skill level and your abilities. For example, if you have bad hand eye coordination then learn a magic trick that requires no sleight of hand. As a general rule of thumb, I encourage beginners to start by learning self-working magic tricks as they are easy to do, hit hard and you can’t screw them up!
How long does it take to learn magic?
Well, to give you some perspective, I’ve been performing for over 10 years and I’m still learning! You see, magic is something that you can continually improve upon and get better at. But to answer your question more directly, it is possible to go from knowing nothing about magic to doing live performances in just a few weeks.
