VENTS Magazine recently had the pleasure of interviewing Albert Cummings, a blues-rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter who’s just shared the “Need Somebody” music video. Read that interview below.
What was is like working with legends like Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter, B.B. King? How did you get the opportunity?
People often ask me what was my big break? I tell them that I have never had a big break, I have had many small breaks. What I mean by that is, it’s all the little things that add up. All three of those guys are my idols. Even getting to meet them was exciting for me. Each of them has a different story about how I met them but the bottom line is hard work and persistence will bring you your dreams!
What are some major music industry lessons you have learned through the years?
I’ve learned that things will never happen as fast as you want them to. You can’t push the universe. You have to allow things to happen and try you’re best to put yourself in the right place at the right time.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
I would tell them to run their own race. Work on becoming an artist. If you become an artist there will be no one like you, therefore you won’t have any competition because there is only one you. Be yourself because everyone else is taken.(Oscar Wilde)
Tell us about the video for “Need Somebody”, what was it like shooting it? What is your favorite aspect of shooting music videos?
We shot that in an old warehouse in Los Angeles. It was such a cool old building. Shooting the videos is easy for the band. Our main objective was to have fun while the film crew worked their hardest to capture that! My favorite part was the whole shoot. It’s a blast to film videos!!!
How did the members of the band join you on the “Albert Cummings” journey?
My band has changed a lot over the years but the present musicians are the best and the best combination I’ve ever had. Scot Sutherland on bass began playing with players like Son Seals. Warren Grant on drums grew up watching his father play drums with BB King and the greats of the Texas blues scene. Together they just lock in. That make my life very easy because it’s all about the pulse. We get along on stage as well as we do off stage which makes it all possible. We all met thru mutual friends along the way.
