At the time, the third season of Community felt momentous. It seemed like it might be the end, or would be the end of an era. It was, initially, going to be the end of the run for Dan Harmon. He had created the show, but he also turned it into an unwieldy beast. Also, he was not easy to work with, be you a writer, an actor, or a studio executive. The show would continue, and Harmon would return, but season three has a note of finality to it, even if it wasn’t final in any way. How do the episodes of this season rank? Let’s find out!
22. “Foosball and Nocturnal Vigilantism”
21. “Contemporary Impressionists”
20. “Advanced Gay”
19. “The First Chang Dynasty”
18. “Virtual Systems Analysis”
17. “Studies in Modern Movement”
16. “Introduction to Finality”
15. “Course Listing Unavailable”
14. “Digital Estate Planning”
13. “Origins of Vampire Mythology”
12. “Biology 101”
11. “Geography of Global Conflict”
10. “Urban Matrimony and Sandwich Arts”
9. “Digital Exploration of Interior Design”
8. “Competitive Ecology”
7. “Pillows and Blankets”
6. “Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps”
5. “Curriculum Unavailable”
4. “Basic Lupine Urology”
3. “Remedial Chaos Theory”
2. “Regional Holiday Music”
1. “Documentary Filmmaking: Redux”
Hey, this is a really good season! Now, it kind of ends on a middling note. It doesn’t end with a bang, and the series finale is mostly just fine. That being said, throughout the season there are some really strong ones. I’d say the top five episodes are great, and there are a few more really good ones. “Documentary Filmmaking: Redux,” a parody of Hearts of Darkness, is maybe my favorite episode in the show’s run. “Regional Holiday Music” is up there as well. Sure, there are a few iffy episodes, but all in all this is the strongest season thus far. Had it been Harmon’s swan song, it would have been a worthy one.
