Kevin Smith is a survivor and no, I’m not referring to his near demise from a heart attack several years back (though that was pretty impressive too, right?)…
Hitting the ground running back in early 1994 with the smash indie comedy Clerks, New Jersey native Kevin Smith had a big hand in shaping the movie scene throughout that remaining decade – and beyond – with such written and directed fare as Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl, Clerks II and Red State. Before it was popular and considered kewl, Smith had the ear of his generation via his ability to break down in memorable dialogue exactly why talking about comic books and airplane orgasms was so much damn fun. In short, he spoke geek not only fluently, but also in a manner which translated into successful box-office receipts.
With the release of the eagerly anticipated Clerks III now but mere months away, one might be forgiven for thinking that the Zack and Miri Make a Porno director is putting all of his eggs in one big Quick Stop basket. But, being industrious and industry-savvy in the best tradition of P.T. Barnum, Smith is already hard at work on a brand-spankin’ new screenplay, our sources at Screen Rant inform us.
On a recent podcast of his FatMan Beyond, Smith spoke in some detail about the work he’s putting in on a new script, revealing that writing it has reinvigorated his passion for being a renowned wordsmith.
“I just finished this script on another thing I’m working on, and now I’m diving into a new movie script,” Smith revealed. “This morning I got up and was like, ‘I think I’m gonna start writing a new movie.’ When I start a new script, I’m like ‘Oh my god, what are the possibilities here?’ Like, ‘What’s gonna happen?’ Never mind the ones you get paid to write, you know what’s gonna happen there, because generally there’s an outline, but the thing that you write for you, man. Every day is a goddamn adventure, it’s electric, where you’re discovering this thing, the story, and finding nuances, and falling in love with it hardcore. And it’s this weird romance that you know will come to an end…So I’m in that period. Every once in a while I remember how wonderful it is to be a writer.”
It’s always brilliant to see an already talented creator become reinvigorated by his or her craft, and we’ll have a guaranteed follow-up on the precise nature of Smith’s new endeavors just as soon as it becomes known to us. Meanwhile, get set for Clerks III which is due out during the latter half of 2022!
